Houston, 23 November (Argus) — Shell's first shipment of gas-to-liquid (GTL) base oil from its Qatar Pearl GTL plant has reached the Port of Houston, Texas, the company announced today.
Shell intends to use the imported, Group III Pearl GTL base oil to create premium motor oils. The base oils cargo is the first shipment of production from the Pearl plant to reach the Americas. The product will be stored in Houston then sent to the company's GTL-enabled blending facilities elsewhere in the US.
The GTL process converts natural gas to liquids. Pearl, which started production in May, is a partnership between Qatar Petroleum and Shell and is operated by Shell.
