Calgary, 29 May (Argus) — Agrium shut down its Redwater ammonia plant in north central Alberta for an undetermined period on May 24 because of a waste heat boiler leak.

The company has yet to determine the extent of the repairs needed for the plant to return to operations, a spokesperson said.

The facility has a capacity of 960,000t/yr of gross ammonia production, most of which is used for upgrading into other nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer products including 720,000t/yr of urea, 180,000t/yr of UAN and 660,000t/yr of MAP.

Work crews were entering the site today but Agrium did not yet know how many tubes are leaking or how difficult it will be to access them.

A planned outage at the plant, one of Agrium's five ammonia operations in Alberta, had been scheduled for the fall.

Such maintenance usually takes about three weeks, Agrium said.

Agrium is meeting customer obligations through alternate supply sources, such as its other plants.
