Japanese engineering firm Chiyoda is teaming up with Italian counterpart Saipem on a subsea engineering joint venture, aimed to tap a growing market for offshore oil and gas projects.

The two companies are partnering on Xodus Subsea, together with UK-based consultant and services firm Xodus. Chiyoda last year formed an alliance with Xodus, aiming to expand further into upstream and offshore energy development areas. Xodus Subsea will provide engineering services to tackle technical subsea challenges.

Chiyoda and Saipem in May this year jointly won an engineering contract for the Shell-led LNG Canada export project in British Columbia. Chiyoda also teamed up with US-based infrastructure company CB&I on LNG projects in North America, given an initial engineering contract in July this year for the $10bn Golden Pass LNG export project at Sabine Pass in Texas.
