Algerian shale gas production could start by 2022, the acting chief executive of state-owned Sonatrach, Said Sahnoune, has said.

Shale gas production could reach 10bn m³/yr by 2025, he said.

Algeria has the potential for substantial shale gas production, with recoverable reserves of 740 trillion ft³ (20 trillion m³), based on a recovery factor of 15pc, he said.

The development of shale gas resources will depend on the availability and proximity of water supply, with water needs of the industry in Algeria estimated at 2.5mn m³/yr.

Sonatrach said in July that it planned to start shale gas production from 2020, targeting output of 30bn m³/yr in the first production phase.
