Balamara finds hard coking coal at Polish project

Australia-listed mining firm Balamara Resources has confirmed that deposits at its Polish Nowa Ruda coking coal project will yield a low-ash hard coking coal product.

Analysis of deposits from the coal resource have indicated a volatile matter content of between 22-26pc and a free swelling index (FSI) of around 8 on an air-dried basis. An FSI rating of 8 indicates that output from the mine will be hard coking coal. Washed coal from the mine also indicated ash content of between 4-7pc.

"The key parameters of the coal suggest that it will be in high demand by coking plants in Poland and across Europe, providing significant impetus to Nowa Ruda and giving Balamara confidence in the commercial viability of the Project," the mining firm said.

The Nowa Ruda coking coal project, which is located in southwest Poland, was in operation until 1995, when the 1mn t/yr mine was placed under care and maintenance because of low coking coal prices and high mining costs.
