US Department of Transportation (DOT) chief of staff Sarah Feinberg has been acting administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, succeeding departing administrator Joseph Szabo.

Feinberg has been DOT chief of staff since 2013. She has led the department's efforts to come up with a $302bn surface transportation reauthorization plan. Congress this year plans to consider reauthorizing the federal transportation program.

As acting rail administrator she will concentrate on making the industry safer, DOT said.

Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx said, "Sarah has been my partner and served as my closest advisor during her tenure as chief of staff at the US Department of Transportation. With her ability to bring clarity, focus and direction to complex challenges, she has become a proven leader within our agency."

Szabo, named to head the agency in 2009, stepped down on 9 January. He will return to his native Chicago to serve as senior fellow with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

President Barack Obama will nominate a permanent replacement for Szabo.
