Dutch biofuels producer GoodFuels has begun supplying German car manufacturer Volkswagen with marine biofuel at Vlissingen in the Netherlands for its car transport operations.

The Depth RoRo carrier Patara was bunkered with GoodFuels' marine biofuel on voyages between Germany, Ireland, Spain and Portugal.

The fuel, which is made from certified waste and residue feedstocks, reduced the Patara's CO2 emissions by a minimum of 85pc and eliminated sulphur oxide emissions on the voyages, GoodFuels said. It is a "drop-in" fuel that can be used in normal fuel tanks, which means no hardware changes are required.

"By partnering with Volkswagen ... we are showcasing that sustainable biofuels are a scalable, truly sustainable, technically compliant, affordable, and market-ready solution," said GoodFuels' chief commercial officer Isabel Welten.
