Samsung Heavy Industries receives LNG carrier order

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has received an order for a single newbuild LNG carrier.

The order, placed by an unnamed owner in the Oceania region, was valued at around 224bn won ($193mn) — slightly less than most orders placed at other South Korean shipyards in recent weeks, but higher than earlier in the year. Orders for LNG carriers have generally been priced higher than a year earlier in recent months as rising steel prices have lifted production costs, market participants said.

Delivery of the ordered vessel is scheduled by the end of May 2024.

The LNG carrier order is SHI's seventh so far this year, with the firm receiving orders for a single carrier in early January, a pair in late May, and three earlier this month.
