Japanese gas distributor Tokyo Gas is developing an offshore wind power farm in Fukushima prefecture, advancing its target of having 6GW of renewable power output by 2030.

Work has started on building two floating offshore windmills off the coast of Japan's northeast Fukushima prefecture, Tokyo Gas and its project partner utility Shinobuyama Fukushima Power announced on 3 February.

The wind power farm will have a maximum capacity of 300MW, although further details such as the targeted start date of commercial operations were undisclosed.

Tokyo Gas acquired a stake in Chiba Offshore Wind in 2020 to participate in offshore wind power projects.

Tokyo Gas' target of increasing its renewable energy output to 6GW by 2030 could cut up to 17mn t of CO2 emissions. This was revised from an original target of 5GW of renewable energy output with 10mn t of CO2 reductions in 2019. The gas distributor plans to invest ¥2 trillion ($17.6bn) in energy transition areas.
