US Steel plans $1.2bn in Mon Valley upgrades

Pennsylvania-based integrated steelmaker US Steel will invest $1.2bn in new equipment at its Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh.

The investments include $1bn to install a new endless casting and rolling facility at the Edgar Thomson Plant at its Mon Valley Works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, which will combine thin slab casting and hot-rolled coil production into a single process and reduce the length of the current process by 75pc. It expects the upgrades to be completed in 2022.

The company expects the investments to make Mon Valley Works the primary source of substrate for XG3 Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) for automotive customers.

The 2.9mn st/yr raw steel production capacity at the blast furnace-based Edgar Thomson Plant.

Another $150mn-200mn investment will add a cogeneration facility at US Steel's Clairton coke plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania.
