US Steel's Gary Works restarting after flooding

US Steel's largest steelmaking facility is working to restart its four blast furnaces by midweek after a flooding incident last week.

A burst pipe caused the flooding on 27 November near the blast furnaces at US Steel's Gary Works in Gary, Indiana. The integrated steelmaker stopped steel production at the 7.5mn st/yr facility as a result.

US Steel has restarted one blast furnace, and is expecting the rest of the facility to be back running by midweek.

The company said customers should not be impacted by the unplanned outage.

US Steel has been pivoting toward a focus on three mills including Gary Works, with other investments focused on its Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania and on acquiring the remaining 50.1pc stake in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Big River Steel in Arkansas.
