SDI delays start-up of Texas galvanizing line

Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Steel Dynamics (SDI) is delaying the start-up of its galvanizing line located at its new flat-rolled mill in Texas.

The galvanizing line was expected to come on line in August, and has now been delayed to September, according to chief executive Mark Millett, who spoke at a steel conference in Atlanta.

The 550,000 short ton (st)/yr galvanizing line is located in the 3mn st/yr flat-rolled mill, which is being constructed in Sinton, near the port city of Corpus Christi.

Millett said the mill's 250,000st/yr paint line has already started up.

The mill has faced delays related to the Covid-19 pandemic, related restrictions and episodes of wet weather that hit the region in recent months, delaying the start-up of the hot side of the mill to November.

Millett expects the mill to ramp up to 80pc of capacity in 2022 and produce 2.5mn st of flat-rolled steel.
