USW, Stelco meeting today over contract

Stelco's largest union group was meeting with the leadership at Canadian integrated steelmaker Stelco today in an attempt to come to an agreement over a new contract.

The United Steelworkers (USW) Local 8782 union was meeting with Stelco's chief executive Alan Kestenbaum and other members of his team today in a final session. The prior contract expired on 30 June.

USW Local 8782 president Randy Graham said if no agreement were to be reached today, the union would be in a legal position to go on strike on 22 August. Graham was hopeful an agreement could be reached.

If the two sides cannot reconcile their differences, the 3.1 short tons/yr mill would have to begin the work to shut down the furnace on Thursday, beginning the production stoppage at the mill, Graham said.

The membership of USW Local 8782 rejected the new contract on 28 July with 52pc voting against.

Stelco did not respond to a request to comment.
