US steelmaker Nucor is closing down its hollow structural tube (HSS) plant in Chicago.
The company said the smaller size tubular segment, which the Chicago plant serves, has changed in the last few years, and Nucor will move its production to other plants.
The first layoffs at the Chicago plant are expected in late November, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the state of Illinois.
Nucor recently opened a tube facility in Kentucky, and it produces tubular products at other sites in Illinois and Alabama.
Nucor will keep sales and administrative offices in Chicago.
