US pipemaker Wheatland Tube is shuttering its Chicago plant.
The facility produces electric metallic tube (EMT) conduit, fencing, and other products for the solar industry.
Wheatland is a subsidiary of steel service center Zekelman Industries and is closing the facility mostly because of competition from imports coming in from Mexico, owner Barry Zekelman told Argus. Some of the Chicago plant's production will move to Wheatland's plant in Blytheville, Arkansas.
Layoffs at the plant will take place between November and next July, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the state of Illinois.
