Beijing has announced plans to eliminate single-use plastics across the country, in a major move to reduce plastic pollution.
Non-degradable plastic bags will be banned in major cities by the end of 2020 and across the country by 2022.
China will gradually ban or restrict the production, sales and use of certain plastics, according to top economic planning agency the National Development and Reform Commission.
China is one of the world's largest consumers and producers of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) resins, which are used to make plastic products and in various plastic applications. The proposed ban is expected to impact virgin PE and PP demand in the longer term.
China is also expected to promote bio-degradable plastics and boost its recycling sector as part of the move.
