A second electric arc furnace (EAF) could be added to the ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel (AM/NS) joint venture rerolling sheet mill in Calvert, Alabama.
The mill, a 50/50 joint venture that has a rerolling capacity of 5.84mn short ton (st)/yr, is in the middle of a 1.65mn st/yr EAF installation to supply it with internally-sourced slabs. AM/NS Calvert currently relies entirely on domestic and foreign-sourced slabs.
ArcelorMittal said last week that the current work to build the new EAF comes with an option to add a second one at a lower cost.
The internally-sourced slabs will help the mill meet melted and poured requirements under the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement.
Calvert's hot strip mill produced 1.21mn st in the third quarter, down by 8pc compared to the prior year.
