US automaker General Motors (GM) will idle its full-size truck plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for two weeks beginning 27 March "in an effort to maintain optimal inventory levels with our dealerships," according to a spokesman.

The facility builds the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks.

Production has increased while demand has remained steady, leading to the decision to idle the facility temporarily.

GM has also idled its Silao, Mexico, full-size truck plant for a week as it deals with unspecified supply chain issues.

The US automotive industry is estimated to lose production of 199,000 vehicles during 2023 as the industry continues to deal with semiconductor and other parts shortages.
