Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union at Mack Trucks rejected a tentative contract agreement and went on strike this morning.

UAW workers voted down the tentative agreement on Sunday by a vote of 73pc. The strike by the 4,000 represented union members began at 7am ET Monday. The UAW members represent production and parts distribution facilities in Florida, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Heavy truck manufacturer Mack Trucks and the UAW had reached a five-year tentative agreement on 3 October, ahead of the expiration of the existing contract.

The striking Mack Truck UAW members join 25,000 Ford, General Motors and Stellantis UAW members that are striking five assembly plants and 36 parts distribution centers across the US. The strikes began on 15 September and have expanded each week since, with the UAW putting a pause on widening the strike on Friday, citing progress made with the automakers.
