Japanese automaker Honda Motor has lowered its global electric vehicle (EV) sales target for 2030, and now sees hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as the key powertrain in its energy transition strategy.

Honda revised its product launch plan and now expects its global EV sales ratio in 2030 to fall below 30pc, citing industry uncertainty from a slowing EV market, shifting regulations, and changing trade policies.

By 2030, the company aims to boost annual vehicle sales above 3.6mn units, with HEVs making up 2.2mn units.

The automaker plans to launch 13 next-generation hybrid models globally over four years starting in 2027, aiming to expand its HEV lineup and meet rising demand.

Honda will enhance its hybrid system to improve range and efficiency, aiming to cut costs by over 30pc by 2028 compared to current models.

In North America, Honda will develop a hybrid system for large vehicles, combining powerful performance and high efficiency, to meet demand for spacious models launching in the latter half of the 2020s.

It is developing next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for high-end EVs and HEVs, launching in North America and Japan by 2027.

In China, Honda will partner with Chinese autonomous technology startup Momenta to develop next-gen ADAS for local conditions, equipping all future models sold there.
