The US has begun an investigation into the impact on national security of imports of industrial machinery and robotics, a review that could lead to tariffs.
The US Commerce Department began investigating imports of a range of robotics and industrial machinery under section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act on 2 September, according to a government filing today.
The review could result in tariffs on equipment such as industrial stamping and pressing machines, turning and milling machines, grinding equipment, and machine tools for cutting and welding. Metal finishing and treatment equipment and other specialty metalworking equipment will be part of the investigation.
Section 232 investigations have previously led to tariffs on aluminum and steel imports. The Commerce Department is accepting public comments on the review by 17 October.
