Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor will take its Ghent, Kentucky, mill down for a week to integrate an expansion into the mill.

The 1.6mn short tons (st)/yr Gallatin mill will be idled from 31 May through 7 June as Nucor works to complete a 1.4mn st/yr flat-rolled expansion.

The steelmaker expects to fully commission the mill in June and ship 500,000st from the additional capacity in 2022. That amount is down from previous estimates that it would add between 800,000-1mn st to the market in the year.

Nucor announced the expansion in September 2018 and was previously planning to complete it by mid-2021, a few months late after the Covid-19 pandemic led to project delays.
