Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor has purchased a pickle line near its Gallatin flat-rolled mill in Kentucky.

The steelmaker purchased steel service center Steel Technologies' 450,000 short tons (st)/yr pickle line, which can process coils up to 72 inches in width and has capabilities from 0.054-0.500-inch. The pickling and slitting facility is located next to Nucor's Gallatin flat-rolled mill.

The steel mill is undergoing the final work to integrate a 1.4mn st/yr expansion with the existing 1.6mn st/yr mill.

Nucor expects to take control of the pickle line facility on 30 June.

Steel Technologies will retain ownership of slitting equipment at the facility. The company is a Kentucky-based subsidiary of NuMit, a 50:50 joint venture between US steelmaker Nucor and Japanese conglomerate Mitsui.
