Rain Carbon

Rain Carbon Inc. (RCI), a U.S.-based subsidiary of Rain Industries Ltd. in India, is a global leader and innovator in the production of carbon raw materials and advanced materials used in a wide range of industries including the production of aluminum, steel, titanium dioxide, coatings, plastics, concrete, tires and lightweight energy-storage solutions.

The company is the world’s largest supplier of coal tar pitch and the second-largest supplier of calcined petroleum coke. Rain Carbon and its 1,750 global employees operate 14 production facilities across Europe, North America and Asia. The company and its legacy businesses possess more than 150 years of continuously evolving experience in the production of carbon-based materials. In its Carbon business segment, Rain Carbon operates six petroleum coke calcination plants in the United States and two calciners in Visakhapatnam, India. The company also operates five carbon distillation plants in Belgium, Canada, Germany, Poland and Russia.

In its Advanced Materials business unit, Rain Carbon operates four production facilities in Belgium, Canada, Germany and Poland. Rain Carbon has a unique business model of sourcing by-product materials from other industries (petroleum coke from oil refining and coal tar from metallurgical coke production) and “upcycling” them to produce high-value raw material that are essential ingredients in countless manufacturing applications and end products. For instance, calcined petroleum coke and coal tar pitch are the primary raw materials used in the production of carbon anodes for aluminum production. With its infinite recyclability, strength and light weight, aluminum is a “green” metal with a bright future, and Rain Carbon is proud to be an important part of the aluminum supply chain.

Beyond its efforts to create raw materials for cleaner, lighter and faster 21st-century product applications, Rain Carbon is committed to sustainability and minimizing the environmental footprint of its production facilities. Scrubbers installed at its calcination facilities are a prime example, as they enable the company to eliminate as much as 99% of its sulfur-dioxide emissions despite the increasingly high sulfur content in the green petroleum coke supplied by refineries. Elsewhere, the company uses waste-heat recovery systems at five of its calcination plants and four of its distillation and advanced materials plants to produce approximately 140 megawatts of clean electricity and steam that is added to local power grids and used power other industrial processes.
