Fatal accident closes Saraji coking coal mine

UK-Australian mining firm BHP has closed its Saraji coking coal mine in the Bowen basin region of Queensland following a fatal accident on the night of 31 December/1 January.

The mine, which produces premium low-volatile coking coal mines and is part of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), will be closed until further notice while an investigation into the accident takes place. The mine produced 1.11mn t of coking coal in July-September, down from 1.2mn t in the previous quarter and 1.41mn t in July-September 2017.
