The UK government has signed a sector deal with the offshore wind industry with a target of 30GW installed capacity by 2030.

The deal also involves the industry investing £250mn ($327mn) to develop the UK supply chain.

The government plans to hold a contract for difference auction in May 2019 for renewable capacity delivering over 2023-25, with further auctions to take place every two years.

Installed capacity from fully commissioned farms is currently 7.9GW, according to data from RenewableUK.

Another 6.2GW is in development and due to be completed by 2023, which would take installed capacity to just over 14GW.

This includes the 588MW Beatrice wind farm, which is due to be fully commissioned this spring. The 1.2GW Hornsea 1 offshore farm achieved first power in February. Turbine installation will continue this year and full commissioning is expected in the first quarter of 2020. Scottish Power expects to have 490MW of the 714MW East Anglia One farm commissioned by the end of this year.

Environmental group Greenpeace called the deal "woefully inadequate," arguing 45GW is required "given the failure of the new nuclear power programme."

Japanese firm Hitachi suspended activity at two nuclear projects in January while Toshiba in November wound up its subsidiary NuGeneration, which was exploring a 3.4GW nuclear development.
