Japan's Mitsui Chemicals shuts Chiba cracker

Japanese firm Mitsui Chemicals was forced to shut its Chiba-based naphtha cracker on 29 April after issues with its power supply.

The cracker has a capacity of 612,000 t/yr for ethylene and 350,000t/yr for propylene. Its derivative units are expected to be operating normally, despite the shutdown of the upstream cracker. Market participants expect the cracker to remain shut for two weeks and restart on 11 May.

The Japan market is closed for extended holidays from 29 April to 6 May. It is not immediately clear if the country will need to rely on the spot market after the holidays to make up for the shortfall in supplies.

Japan is continuing with its spring turnaround schedule. Trading firm Idemitsu's Chiba-based cracker, which has a capacity of 370,00 t/yr for ethylene, is in the midst of a turnaround, while Mizushima-based Mitsubishi is preparing for a turnaround at its 570,000 t/yr cracker in May.
