HMC’s Thai polypropylene plant faces delay

A polypropylene (PP) production line planned by Thailand's HMC Polymers is behind schedule with operations likely to begin in the latter part of 2022 rather than the first half.

South Korea's GS Engineering and Construction won a $231mn contract to build the new 250,000 t/yr PP line at HMC's petrochemical complex at Mab Ta Phut. But it sees the project taking about 35 months, meaning HMC's plans to start production in the first half of 2022 may be ambitious. Construction will likely begin around the end of October.

HMC, a joint venture between Thailand's state-controlled PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) and multinational petrochemicals firm LyondellBasell, announced plans for the new PP plant in June. The Mab Ta Phut complex in Rayong province already includes three PP lines with combined capacity of 810,000 t/yr and a propane dehydrogenation unit that can produce 300,000 t/yr of propylene.

PTTGC's olefins reconfiguration project at Mab Ta Phut can also supply propylene to HMC as feedstock for the new PP plant.
