TotalEnergies, Technip eye low-carbon LNG solutions

France's TotalEnergies and Technip Energies, the LNG arm of US oil services firm TechnipFMC, have partnered to develop low-carbon infrastructure for LNG production and offshore facilities, as part of their ambition to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2050.

The two firms will collaborate to develop new technologies in a few key areas such as LNG production, cryogeny, production and use of hydrogen for power generation, as well as processes for carbon capture, utilisation and storage. Their ultimate goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of existing and greenfield projects.

This partnership comes amid a greater shift in the industry towards decarbonisation and development of low-carbon solutions. More interest has emerged from market participants to sign carbon-neutral LNG deals, particularly from the start of 2021. BP signed a contract with US firm Sempra's Mexican subsidiary IEnova to deliver their first spot carbon-neutral LNG cargo late last week. Shell has agreed a five-year carbon-neutral LNG supply deal with Chinese state-controlled firm PetroChina, with the first cargo delivered early last week.
