US packaging producer Novolex committed $10mn to doubling recycled post-consumer (PCR) polyethylene (PE) film at its North Vernon, Indiana, recycling facility by 2024, in its fifth annual sustainability report.

This target follows a recent announcement that Novolex will operate a new recycling facility for Nova Chemicals that will expand collection of post-consumer film and production of recycled material to further support the circular economy.

Novolex, reporting its "waste footprint" for the first time, said it had diverted 5mn additional lbs of waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill since starting its waste reduction program in 2022.

The company also recycled 82pc of its non-hazardous waste last year, the first time it was able to report its waste disposal metric, with the remaining 18pc sent to landfills during 2022.

The company also reduced hazardous waste output, reporting 75 metric tonnes in 2022, down from 90 t in 2019.

Of the raw materials and inputs it used in 2022, 49pc came from bio-based, renewable or recycled sources, up from 48pc the prior year.

Novolex aims to reduce GHG emissions from manufacturing by 30pc per tonne of production by 2030.

This was the companies' fifth yearly sustainability report detailing recycling goals, commitment to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and bio-based/sustainable inputs.
