Japan’s Shikoku to scrap oil-fired Anan unit in Sep

Japanese power utility Shikoku Electric Power is planning to decommission the 450MW No.4 oil-fired generation unit at its Anan power complex on 1 September.

Shikoku has been operating the No.4 unit at the Anan power plant in Japan's southern Tokushima prefecture since 1976. But the No.4 unit has been mothballed since 2019 as the ageing unit has become difficult to operate. There are also no prospects of using it in the future, which was the reason for the decommission, Shikoku said.

The 47-year-old unit uses crude oil and fuel oil as generation fuels. Shikoku used 2,074 b/d of oil in April-June, down by 66pc from the same period a year earlier, according to the company's latest financial result.

The country has demolished less efficient oil-fired units and storage tanks over the past decade, line with efforts to increase its share of clean power sources. The country's largest thermal power producer Jera also recently decided to decommission six ageing oil-fired units, with a combined capacity of 4.4GW, at its Kashima power plant.
