The US has pledged $30mn to help accelerate climate-resilient food security efforts across Africa.

US climate envoy John Kerry announced the funding earlier today at the high-level opening segment of the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

A first tranche of $20mn will go to the Africa Adaptation Initiative for the Food Security Accelerator, which will invest in African agricultural businesses and help them create their own independent and climate resilient supply chains.

A second $10mn tranche will go to the Climate Resilience and Adaptation Finance and Technology Transfer Facility. This facility helps to scale technologies like cold chain storage, which help maintain the quality and safety of food.

The funding pledge forms part of the President's Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (Prepare) that US president Joe Biden launched in November 2021 at Cop 26 in Glasgow.

Under the initiative, Biden committed to work with Congress to provide $3bn/yr by 2024 to vulnerable nations to adapt to the impacts of climate change. This is the largest US commitment ever towards climate change adaptation, Kerry pointed out.

Africa is being disproportionately affected by the climate crisis and, to combat this, early and effective adaptation is required, Kerry said.

"Roads and bridges built today can only spur growth and curb poverty if they're still standing tomorrow," he remarked.

Africa is suffering the worst climate change impacts, but through Prepare the US will help Africa adapt to these, according to Kerry.
