  • 02/02/24

Japanese refiner Eneos plans a demonstration project for chemical recycling of waste household plastics, starting with collecting the waste material in south Japan's Oita prefecture.

Eneos will work with Kunisaki city in Oita to collect 1.6t of waste plastics, mainly polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene during February-March. Eneos will then try to recycle the waste products into raw oil, assess if the raw oil can be used to generate new petroleum or plastics goods, examine waste collection volumes from households and study the feasibility of waste plastic handling. Eneos has already set up a recycling facility for the demonstration but declined to disclose further details, including the output capacity of raw oil. It also did not disclose a detailed schedule after March, including any plans for commercialisation.

Fellow domestic refiner Idemitsu also aims to begin commercial operations of its chemical recycling plant in east Japan's Chiba prefecture, processing 20,000 t/yr of used plastics by the April 2025-March 2026 fiscal year. The company plans to work with recycling companies Ichikawa Kankyo and Maeda Sangyo to collect plastic waste.
