Uber plans to globally roll out at least 20,000 Lucid electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with Nuro's autonomous technology, starting with a launch in the US next year.
Lucid, Nuro and Uber, which are all based in the US, have created a global robotaxi program exclusive for the Uber ride-hailing platform, Lucid said on Thursday.
The first launch will be in a major US city using Lucid Gravity vehicles, equipped with Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy systems, according to Lucid.
With an estimated range of 450 miles per charge, the Lucid Gravity EV was selected to reduce downtime and maximize vehicle availability, the company said.
The fleet will expand to at least 20,000 units over six years, operated by Uber or its third-party partners.
The first Lucid-Nuro robotaxi prototype is already operating autonomously at Nuro's Las Vegas proving grounds.
Uber plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Nuro and Lucid, Lucid said.
