Indian coking coal imports rise by 33pc in October

Indian coking coal imports climbed higher in October as more shipments were timed with the end of the monsoon season and stronger demand for steel from increased construction activity.

Indian coking coal imports in October rose by 33.4pc from the previous month to 3.13mn t, according to data from e-commerce company Mjunction.

Australia remained the largest source of these volumes at 1.97mn t, up by 6.4pc from September. But the biggest increase were Indian imports from Canada, which more than tripled month on month to 573,392t in October.

India imported 288,212t of US coking coal in October, up by 149.3pc from September, while October volumes from Mozambique rose by 52.4pc from the previous month to 266,218t.

India's October imports of pulverised injection coal (PCI) rose by 49.8pc month on month to 554,585t. October shipments from Australia increased by 22.6pc from September to 453,335t, while India imported 101,250t of PCI from Russia after not receiving any volumes from the country in the previous month.

India imported 529,137t of metallurgical coke in October, up by 47pc from September. October volumes from top supplier China increased by 71.5pc month on month, but imports from Russia fell by 57.8pc from September to 15,903t.

Indian met coke imports in October also included 80,619t from Japan, 66,249t from Poland, 25,050t from Egypt and 17,966t from Colombia.
