Japan's Toyo Engineering has won a contract to build a 450,000 t/yr linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) plant in the US, through its South Korean subsidiary Toyo Engineering Korea. The value of the deal was undisclosed.

Toyo has agreed with South African energy firm Sasol to build the LLDPE plant at Lake Charles, Louisiana by 2017. The plant will use Unipol PE Process technology, licensed by Univation Technologies. The deal comes 1½ years after Toho agreed to carry out engineering and design services for the plant in May last year.

The LLDPE plant is part of Sasol's $8.1bn ethane cracker and derivatives project, with around 90pc of the 1.5mn t/yr ethylene output converted into specialty chemicals. Sasol made a final investment decision on the Lake Charles complex in October.
