Singapore continued to be the main destination for Chinese gasoline in 2020, accounting for around half of its exports, followed by the Philippines at 13pc and Malaysia at 10pc.

China's gasoline exports totalled 16mn t or averaged 369,000 b/d in 2020, accounting for 12pc of the country's gasoline production at 3.04mn b/d, data from China's general administration of customs and national bureau of statistics show. Gasoline exports edged down by 2.5pc from a year earlier but rose by 24pc from 2018, despite weaker overseas demand because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and weaker export margins. Exports hit the year's lowest level of 185,000 b/d in May and have rebounded since then to help offset domestic inventory pressure.

Singapore imports were down by 17.7pc from 2019 when it accounted for nearly 60pc of China's gasoline exports. Singapore's gasoline buying plunged in the second quarter and recorded the lowest level at 79,000 b/d in June, after the coronavirus started to spread in the city-state.

Chinese shipments accounted for 54.56pc of total imports into Singapore in 2020, according to GTT customs data. Most of this gasoline is imported to blend and re-export to neighbouring Indonesia and Malaysia. The city-state exported 535,000 b/d of gasoline in 2020 compared with 383,000 b/d in 2019. Indonesia, Asia-Pacific's largest gasoline buyer, accounted for 29.71pc of the exports.

The Philippines rose to become the second-largest importer of Chinese gasoline in 2020, with its buying up fivefold from a year earlier. Weaker refining margins have led to the closures of its two refineries. Shell in last August announced the permanent closure of its 110,000 b/d Tabangao refinery, while Petron temporarily shut its 180,000 b/d Bataan refinery in January. The reduced refining capacity attracted trade flows from China whose production recovered rapidly after its Covid-19 outbreak.

Malaysian gasoline imports from China rose by 16pc and making it as the third-largest importer of Chinese gasoline.

Pakistan also recorded large year-on-year growth in its Chinese gasoline imports. Pakistan has emerged as a new destination for Chinese gasoline after it switched to Euro-5 standards specifications for gasoline from last August. Most Chinese gasoline cargoes are oxygenated that previously made flows unviable.
