Dutch SAF supplier SkyNRG gains Corsia accreditation

Netherlands-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer SkyNRG has gained certification to supply fuel under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (Corsia), making it the first biojet supplier to do so.

The certification enables SkyNRG to supply airlines with SAF that is eligible to count towards carbon reduction targets under Corsia, according to awarding certification body the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).

The current accreditation scope only certifies SkyNRG to trade and blend compliant SAF without storage. But the company has committed to expand certification to cover its entire SAF supply chain including production when it brings dedicated SAF capacity on line in the coming years, including a 100,000 t/yr HEFA-SPK SAF plant in the Netherlands' Delfzijl by 2022.

The UN International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) approved the RSB and International Sustainability & Carbon Certification as schemes for assessing Corsia-eligible fuels and suppliers in December last year.

Corsia is ICAO's initiative to decarbonise aviation and aims to cap sector emissions below a 2019 baseline level, effectively making any future growth carbon neutral. Blending Corsia-eligible SAF will be a key route for participating airlines to meet emissions reduction requirements, along with purchasing carbon offsets.

The scheme's pilot phase began this year but involvement remains voluntary until 2027.
