India raises second-half July jet fuel prices

Indian state-controlled refiners have raised jet fuel prices for the second half of July by 2.3pc from earlier in the month, even though the easing of the country's Covid-19 lockdowns has failed to lift consumption.

Prices of jet fuel for domestic airlines in Delhi have increased to 69,858 rupees/kilolitres ($149/bl) for the second half of July from Rs68,262/kl for the previous half of this month, according to state-controlled refiner IOC. Prices for domestic airlines on international routes in Delhi rose to $706/kl ($112/bl) from $701/kl in the first half of July.

Consumption of jet fuel fell by 0.5pc from a month earlier to 67,800 b/d in June and by 60pc compared with pre-pandemic levels of June 2019, oil ministry data showed. It was up by 16pc against the previous year.

Jet fuel is the most affected transport fuel because of the impact of the pandemic, with air travel restrictions crushing demand even as many Indian states eased lockdowns after the daily increase in new Covid-19 cases fell to around 40,000 from over 400,000 in early May.

Jet fuel prices rose to $79.9/bl fob Singapore last week, their highest since January 2020, according to Argus assessments. But prices slipped back to $76.35/bl yesterday, down from $77.80/bl at the start of this month.

The IEA in its monthly oil market report said that it expects jet fuel and kerosine demand in 2021 to grow by a sheer 24,000 b/d from a year earlier to 154,000 b/d and increase by a further 58,000 b/d next year. This will still keep consumption 23,000 b/d lower than pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
