Police clearing protestors from Shell's Pernis refinery

Dutch police are today removing protestors from around Shell's 420,000 b/d Pernis refinery.

Greenpeace activists this morning blockaded the entrance to the refinery, which is Europe's largest, using a sailing ship and other smaller watercraft, while others scaled a storage tank on the land immediately adjacent to the water. Around 80 activists are involved in the protest. A spokesperson for Shell Netherlands said that refinery operations have not been affected.

Rotterdam police said the operation to clear the protestors is proceeding in two stages, with the clearance of the waterway leading to the refinery the priority for safety reasons. Greenpeace ship Beluga II began moving away from the blockade area at around 11:30 BST (10:30 GMT), according to vessel tracking service Fleetmon. Police boats continue to move protestors in kayaks away from the area. The second part of the operation will be to remove protestors from the top of a storage tank in the area. The tank is not in use, and is therefore less of a safety concern than the blockade of the harbour area.
