A ship management company and a shipowner were fined $3mn and sentenced to five years of probation for illegal discharges from a crude tanker and deliberately hiding the activity from US Coast Guard inspectors.

Greece's Liquimar Tankers Management Services and vessel owner Evridiki Navigation were sentenced after being convicted of four charges, including violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, a US law that implements the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, also known as MARPOL. They also falsified ship documents and interfered with a US Coast Guard inspection, according to court documents.

Liquimar and Evridiki were found guilty for not keeping an accurate account of the discharges on board the M/T Evridiki and disclosing problems with the ship's oil filtering equipment.

According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the ship's chief engineer, Nikolaos Vastardis, used a hidden valve to trap water inside the ship's oil content meter so that it showed water being discharged from the ship as opposed to oil.

The two companies were also guilty of creating fake certificates showing it complied with safety and environmental requirements for their ship.

Judge Richard Andrews, a US district judge for the District of Delaware, sentenced Evridiki to pay a $2mn fine while Liquimar was fined $1mn.

Liquimar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
