India’s 2H May ex-Mumbai bitumen prices rise

Indian state-controlled refiners in Mumbai have increased listed ex-Mumbai bitumen prices by 240 rupees/t ($3.09/t) for the second half of May.

Prices of bulk VG10 and VG30 are at Rs52,080/t and $52,380/t respectively, while prices of drummed VG10 and VG30 are at Rs59,380/t and Rs60,180/t respectively for the two-week period. This was close to a record high achieved in April.

Consumption of bitumen in India has been slower than normal as road paving activity was hindered by delays in disbursing project funds and unseasonal rain in parts of south India. Contractors were delaying projects as they were unable to digest the current prices, market participants said, adding that the lower demand weighed on enquiries for seaborne cargoes.

State-controlled refiners Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum operate 240,000 b/d and 190,000 b/d refineries in Mumbai respectively.

Iranian bulk bitumen prices were assessed by Argus at $415/t fob Iran for the week ended 13 May, while drum prices were assessed at $466/t fob Iran.
