US steelmaker, Steel Dynamics (SDI), has selected Mississippi as the home of a greenfield aluminum rolling mill it first announced in July, according to local filings and comments from state government.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) called for a special session of the state's legislature on 2 November to extend incentives to an unnamed rolled aluminum rolling mill planned for the Golden Triangle area — an action which comes on the heels of a company called Aluminum Dynamics filing to incorporate in the state last week.
Officers of the newly registered Mississippi company include Richard Poinsatte, who was also listed in the state database as vice president of SDI's Columbus, Mississippi, steel mill.
The project will involve one aluminum rolling mill, biocarbon production facilities and other unspecified industrial properties, Reeves' office said.
SDI could not be reached for comment and did not specify the location of the mill in its original announcement in July.
SDI's 650,000 metric tonne/yr mill is expected to cost $2.2bn and will target an opening date of early 2025. Its planned product mix will be 45pc can sheet, 35pc automotive, and 20pc common alloy.
The project is part of a broad surge in US investment in wrought aluminum production, including Ball's Los Luna, New Mexico mill and Novelis' Bay Minette, Alabama, and Guthrie, Kentucky, investments.
US investment in rolled aluminum capacity has lagged an explosion in rolled steel investments over the past several years, even following Section 232 tariffs, but the industry has benefited from several trade cases against imports, including antidumping duties on aluminum foil and common alloy sheet.
