Australian grain export sector builds capacity

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is preparing to support Australian grain exporters in meeting international demand and to boost the country's shipments.

Most parts of Australia are experiencing their best winter crop production, while floods have harmed some crops in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.

Onshore grain testing and pesticide treatment can hold up exports by 7-10 days but DAFF has negotiated with Mexico for in-transit treatment for bulk shipments. The changes reduce congestion at ports, cuts costs for exporters and creates capacity to increase Australian exports.

DAFF has approved two new mobile bulk loading operators, with two more under assessment, providing more options for exporters to move grain through ports.

The value of Australian crop exports is forecast to increase to A$46.7bn ($31bn) in the 2022-23 fiscal year ending 30 June, an 18pc increase onA$39.6bn for 2021-22, according to DAFF.

Grain aggregator Viterra took receival of 1.27mn t of grain into sites during 12-18 December, taking total deliveries to 5.14mn t for the season so far and surpassing last year's deliveries for the same period by 259,000t. All 16 Viterra sites are now receiving grain, with it expecting to exceed last season's total receivals of 5.64mn t with plenty of deliveries still left to come.

Optimal conditions have provided a prime harvest and transport environment for farmers, with Viterra extending its opening hours to cater for increased receivals. Clearer weather has helped meet domestic demand for grain, as growers in the southern states of Australia hit their peak harvest season.

Viterra has loaded South Australian growers' new-season grain on to vessels at five of Viterra's six port terminals since the start of the season, bound for international markets. Viterra has 18 exporters that have forward booked 7mn t of shipping capacity so far this year.
