India has slashed a windfall tax on crude production in the latest review of its tax scheme.

India cut the windfall levy on domestic crude production to 4,100 rupees/t ($6.84/bl) from 2 May, according to latest data from the oil ministry. The Indian government had reintroduced the tax at Rs6,400/t from 19 April, after cutting it to zero a fortnight earlier.

The government revises windfall tax rates every two weeks, but export duties on diesel remained scrapped in the latest review.

India scrapped diesel export duties on 19 April for the first time since the introduction of the tax regime in July 2022, as Asian gasoil margins continued to decline.

The Argus Singapore 10ppm (0.001pc) sulphur gasoil swap was at a $13.36/bl premium to Dubai crude on 2 May, lower than the $15.44/bl average in April and $27.16/bl average in January-March. The Asian gasoil market flipped into a $0.20/bl contango on 28 April, the first time markets were in contango since July 2021, because of a regional oversupply of diesel.
