A Japanese group of firms has offset CO2 emitted from an entire jet fuel supply chain by purchasing carbon credits, as a step forward to achieving net zero by 2050.

Japanese upstream firm Inpex and refiner Idemitsu purchased carbon credits that offset around 10,000t of CO2 emitted from an entire supply chain, including from Murban crude oil produced by Inpex and supplied to Idemitsu for it to produce 3,000t of jet fuel, as well as transportation of crude and jet fuel. Inpex is one of shareholders of Abu Dhabi's Murban crude stream.

The group did not disclose from which company it bought the carbon credits, but the credits are verified by the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), it said. The procedure and completion of the offset is also certified by third-party testing, inspection and certification provider Socotec Japan, the group added.

Carbon-neutral aviation fuel will be supplied to domestic airline company All Nippon Airways (ANA) during May, for domestic flights departing and landing at Hiroshima airport, where the G7 leaders' summit will be held during 19-21 May.

ANA operates its flights between the Hiroshima and three airports — Haneda in Tokyo, Chitose in Hokkaido and Okinawa. The jet fuel supplied to Hiroshima airport is mainly delivered from the 120,000 b/d Seibu Oil refinery in Yamaguchi prefecture, which is 66.9pc owned by Idemitsu. Idemitsu's Hokkaido and Chiba plants also supply jet fuel to other airports.
