Cathay Pacific refuels overseas cargo flights with SAF

Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific in June refuelled four cargo flights out of Singapore's Changi Airport using jet fuel blended with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied by ExxonMobil.

The airline had previously only used SAF for a few commercial flights out of Hong Kong in 2022, as well as for the past six years in Europe for the delivery of new Airbus A350 aircraft.

The neat SAF was made from 100pc used cooking oil and meets International Sustainability and Carbon Certification standards. On a lifecycle basis it can reduce GHG emissions by nearly 90pc compared with conventional jet fuel, according to Cathay.

Cathay said it was "an important milestone to achieve its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050", according to chief executive Ronald Lam.

The airline previously pledged for 10pc of its total fuel consumption to be SAF by 2030.

Cathay has also teamed up with China's State Power Investment Corporation in March this year to develop four SAF plants by converting renewable electricity into liquid fuels to produce SAF.
