Singaporean conglomerate Keppel and Indian firm AM Green, a subsidiary of Indian renewables developer Greenko, have signed an initial agreement to jointly explore producing biogenic carbon-based sustainable fuels.

The firms will explore producing sustainable fuels such as bio-methanol and green methanol, second-generation ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Keppel said on 11 December. The duration of the agreement and completion timelines for these projects were undisclosed. The firms signed the initial agreement at the Cop 28 UN climate summit in Dubai.

The companies will identify, evaluate and co-develop projects in southeast Asia and the Middle East to harness at least 1mn t of biogenic CO2 to produce sustainable fuels at AM Green's plants. These fuels will help decarbonise heavy industrial operations and the aviation sector, Keppel said.

Keppel and Greenko will also identify areas for co-operation in the value chain of a bio-methanol project in India, with an aim to produce 500,000 t/yr. But Keppel did not provide further details.

"Keppel's experience in handling and treating domestic waste and organic feedstock, as well as our know-how in effective carbon cycling will benefit this collaboration with AM Green," said Keppel Infrastructure's chief executive officer Cindy Lim.

The new agreement is an extension of a deal Keppel and Greenko signed in October 2022 to explore the feasibility of jointly developing a green ammonia production facility in India with a capacity of at least 250,000 t/yr, Keppel said.

Keppel also separately signed an agreement with Temasek subsidiary GenZero at Cop 28 to study the feasibility of retiring Asia-Pacific coal-fired power plants early, as well as clean energy alternative projects.

Malaysian renewable energy company Gentari in October entered a partnership with AM Green, with the aim of jointly producing 5mn t/yr of green ammonia in India by 2030. The 5mn t/yr green ammonia target is equivalent to 1mn t/yr of green hydrogen, the firms said, adding that this represents about 20pc of India's national production target of 5mn t/yr by 2030.
