Trump to 'feel out' Putin on ceasefire deal

President Donald Trump committed to a one-on-one meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin so he can make his personal assessment of a proposed ceasefire deal in Ukraine, administration officials said today.

White House officials conceded Tuesday that any ceasefire deal needs the support of Ukraine, whose president Volodymyr Zelenskiy was not invited to the 15 August summit between Trump and Putin. But administration officials say there is still value in Trump meeting personally with Putin to hear him out on a ceasefire proposal they believe could bring an end to more than three years of fighting in Ukraine.

"I think it's a feel-out meeting to be honest," US secretary of state Marco Rubio said Tuesday in an interview with Fox News. "The president feels like, look, I've got to look at this guy across the table. I need to see him face to face."

Trump has said the ceasefire plan would involve some "land swapping" under which Ukraine would lose some territory, but gain back some land that Russian forces have been occupying. Zelenskiy has already rejected this part of the proposal, while asserting that decisions made without Ukraine's participation would be "stillborn" and not achieve anything. Trump on Monday said he was "bothered" that Zelenskiy objected to the land swap, and at the same time touted what he said was a "great relationship" with Putin.

NATO leaders have voiced concerns about Ukraine being excluded from the meeting. UK prime minister Keir Starmer and Canadian prime minister Mark Carney welcomed efforts led by Trump to bring peace, but they agreed "this must be built with Ukraine, not imposed upon it," Starmer's office said Monday.

German chancellor Friedrich Merz has organized a virtual meeting on Wednesday that is meant to allow Trump, Zelenskiy and other European leaders to coordinate ahead of the Alaska summit.

The White House has yet to provide a specific time or location for the Alaska summit. On Monday, Trump appeared to misspeak when he said "we're going to Russia". The White House said there may be "plans in the future to travel to Russia" but said the summit on Friday will be in Alaska. Rubio separately spoke Tuesday with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov to prepare for the summit, his office said.
