Japanese trading house Itochu, petrochemical company Toray and marine shipping firm Uyeno Transtech plan to explore setting up an ammonia bunkering hub at the port of Nagoya in the central Aichi prefecture by 2030.

The companies aim to research and prepare to build onshore ammonia bunkering facilities at the Nagoya port, Itochu said on 25 September. The facilities could include storage tanks and hoses to supply fuel ammonia to ships, but details are yet to be decided, Itochu said.

Itochu may consider bringing its ammonia bunkering ship from Singapore to the Nagoya port after 2030 once demand for ammonia as a marine fuel grows in Japan. The trading house plans to demonstrate this ammonia bunkering vessel after October 2027 and start commercial operations by 2028 in the port of Singapore.

Itochu considers ammonia a potential alternative marine fuel. Itochu will first commercialise ammonia bunkering in Singapore and then expand the business to Spain, the Suez Canal, Egypt and Japan.

Japanese companies like trading house Sumitomo and shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kaisha have attempted to develop an ammonia bunkering ship. But Itochu is ahead of the industry in turning a port into an ammonia bunkering hub in the country.
